Spring Home Maintenance Checklist for Northeast Wisconsin Homeowners
Wisconsin winters are hard on a house. Here's the spring checklist that catches the damage early — inside, outside, and up on the roof.

- Start outside: winter and ice dams do their damage to the roof, gutters, and siding.
- Test the AC and the sump pump before you need them — not during the first hot, wet week.
- A few of these are worth a pro; most are a Saturday. We've flagged which is which.
By the time the snow finally clears in Northeast Wisconsin, your house has been through months of freeze-thaw, ice, and heavy snow load. Spring is the moment to catch what winter did before it turns into a summer problem. Here's a practical, room-by-room checklist for a Green Bay-area home.
Outside — start here
- Roof: Look for missing, curled, or cracked shingles, and any damage where ice dams sat along the eaves. Binoculars from the ground are safer than a ladder.
- Gutters and downspouts: Clear them out and check that they still drain away from the foundation. Ice pulls gutters loose over winter.
- Siding and trim: Check for cracked caulk, gaps, and any spots where water could get in. Re-caulk before summer storms.
- Foundation and grading: Look for new cracks and make sure the ground still slopes away from the house.
- Outdoor faucets and hoses: Turn them on and check for leaks or burst pipes from the freeze.
- Deck and fence: Check for loose boards, popped nails, and rot; a spring wash and reseal extends their life.
Inside — before summer hits
- AC: Replace the filter, clear the outdoor unit of leaves and debris, and run a test cycle now — not on the first 90-degree day.
- Sump pump: Pour a bucket of water into the pit and confirm it kicks on. Spring melt and rain are exactly when you find out it failed.
- Smoke and CO detectors: Test them and change batteries.
- Water heater: Look for any moisture, rust, or drips around the base (see our signs-you-need-a-new-water-heater guide).
- Windows and doors: Check screens for tears and weatherstripping for gaps.
- Attic: If you had ice dams, check for water staining on the underside of the roof deck and around the eaves.
What to leave to a pro
Most of this list is a Saturday with a ladder and a caulk gun. A few items are worth a professional: any roof damage you spotted, an AC that doesn't cool on the test run, a sump pump that didn't kick on, and any foundation cracks that look new or are growing. Those are the ones where catching it in spring saves a much bigger bill later.
Don't have a free Saturday — or a ladder you trust? Hand the whole list to one team and have it knocked out in a single visit.
